Temat postu: Rob Burrow walks tall for Leeds Rhinos
Rob Burrow walks tall for Leeds Rhinos
"I don't suppose I'll ever stop hearing or reading about my size for the rest of my career," says Burrow who is, unsurprisingly, the smallest player in Super League.
But even in rugby league Burrow, whose electrifying pace off the mark is his biggest asset, has proved that size is not important.
"Plenty of people joke that the mascots are bigger than me," said Burrow, who enjoyed the best season of his career in 2007. "It doesn't bother me at all. You just have to make do with the cards you're dealt and I try and use my size to my advantage."
Burrow ducked, dived and "burrowed" to help Leeds Rhinos win the Super League title for only the second time, receiving the Harry Sunderland Trophy as man of the match in the 336 romp over league leaders St Helens in the Old Trafford Grand Final. Then he was named man of the series as Great Britain roared to a 30 whitewash over New Zealand.
"It's going to be tough following that success," admitted Burrow, whose Leeds side open Super League XIII with a home match against Hull Kingston Rovers on Saturday.
"It was a dream season but now Tony Smith has moved to the international job full time we have a new coach in Brian McClennan and new challenges. I've won the Grand Final twice and World Club Challenge but lost in two Challenge Cup finals, so that's a goal.
"We came good at the right time but it's harder to retain a trophy than win it first time," he said.
Burrow made his Great Britain debut as a sub against New Zealand in 2005 but was not selected by Brian Noble for his last eight Tests in charge before Smith took over.
He confesses that he owes a big debt to Smith, whose fouryear tenure coincided with the chirpy scrumhalf's emergence. "An absolute perfectionist," said Burrow, "and definitely the best coach I've ever worked with."
The admiration is mutual with Smith proclaiming after the Grand Final: "In the past Leeds haven't had a general on the field. They have now and Rob has been outstanding all season.
"In the past he was a very, very good individual player. Now he's a very, very good team player as well. He has grown in stature."
He realises, however, that it will be even more difficult for Leeds this season.
"St Helens will be even more hungry for success and you can never discount Bradford, Wigan or Hull, nike free, and someone else will come through to be in the mix this season.
"Our first opponents, Hull KR, had made 11 new signings, including our old teammate Chev Walker, and they look a strong outfit.
"They beat us early on last year and they'll surprise a few more teams this season in what looks a more competitive Super League than ever.".
